5 Reasons why Gozo is the perfect travel destination for winter

Many people would typically associate Mediterranean islands with summer holidays.
But we would highly recommend a winter trip to Gozo because you will be able to explore it thoroughly, with less crowds and less chances of dehydration.
So here are 5 reasons why we think Malta’s sister isle should be on your travel wishlist in the colder months too.
For the most part, the weather is still great
Which brings us to the first point - Gozo’s colder months are probably not that cold by most international standards.
Even in January and February, which have the only weeks of the year that are actually considerably cold, daytime highs can typically go up to even 16°C, with nighttime temperatures rarely being below 10°C.
So whilst you might need to layer up a bit more, especially if you decide to explore Gozo’s coastal towns or hillier areas, you should still encounter manageable weather with significant sunshine.
Less people around means more possibilities to explore
Famous Gozitan landmarks which usually make it to most people’s itineraries include the Cittadella in Rabat, Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra and Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Għarb, which is where our Ogygia Suites are also located.
During peak summer periods it’s quite common to have to wait in queues to enter these historically important sites, but you will definitely not encounter that situation as much if you’re in Gozo between November and March.
Same goes for Gozo’s more populated and commercial areas, namely Victoria and Xlendi.
Everything is very close to get to
Gozo is already a very small island. Just to give you an idea, you should be able to cross the whole of Gozo from the harbour in Mġarr in just over half an hour by car.
If you are able to avoid the busier area of Victoria during the morning or evening rush hours, as well as the ferry port in the weekend, you should experience quite seamless travelling all across Gozo in the winter.
Cultural events are constant, especially during Christmas
Aside from the adorable Christmas markets which tend to sprout up throughout most of the villages in December, there is always going to be a cultural event worth exploring in Gozo.
Ahead of time, be sure to look up what options of food festivals, concerts, theatrical performances and art exhibitions there will be during the winter period when you decide to visit Gozo.
Nothing beats the cosiness of quaint villages
The warmly lit narrow streets and the welcoming authentic eateries, combined with the slower and more relaxed overall pace of life in Gozo, should make planning a winter trip to this island an absolute no-brainer.
Cosy winter evenings spent inside one of our suites might also end up feeling like your new home away from home.
